Connecting with your donors during the coronavirus

A handwritten thank-you goes a long way.

Donors are at the heart of the American Legion Auxiliary mission, touching lives and making a positive impact on our nation’s heroes and their families.

During this time of social distancing, isolation, and uncertainty, it is vital for units to reach out to their local supporters to let them know they are appreciated and loved.

Remember: These communications are not going to look like they normally do, because our lives don’t look like they normally do. Aside from reaching out to them for support, donors need to hear from us so they can ensure that we truly care about them.

Luckily, there are so many ways we can connect with donors while practicing social distancing. You can mail them a handwritten letter, pick up the phone and call them, reach out through social media, or just send an email.

You know your donors best, so be sure to use the most appropriate method of contact. Some donors are stuck inside and alone. A call from you would make their day. Others are working from their living rooms and kitchens while trying to educate their children, and a call might be overwhelming, so write them a letter instead.

You could also invite donors to participate in a group video chat. A support group of people who all love the ALA mission could be just what you and other supporters need during these challenging times. It could be a great way to share activities with kids, recipes, or ways you can continue to support veterans without meeting in person.

Everyone is experiencing their own unique struggles, so don’t be afraid to ask donors what they need. See what you can do to make them feel special.

Try your best to spread positivity to your supporters. Keep them up to date on all of the things your unit is doing to help veterans, military, and their families while staying home. Maybe you’re sending supplies or notes to a veteran’s home — share those positive stories with a donor update email! They give to your mission, and they want to see it succeed.

You are not alone. Be sure to follow American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters’ social media to see inspiring stories, activity ideas, and more ways to help the American Legion Auxiliary mission thrive, despite the obstacles we are facing.
