Military Families

It may seem that spending time with your family is becoming more challenging as grandchildren, children, and other relatives join the military, move to a new city, or go to college. However, you can maintain strong family ties with a little creativity. Here are four tips to make sure you stay connected:

1. Make dinner a group effort.
If you’re hosting a special dinner when family is in town, you may be tempted to do it all yourself. Invite everyone to come over early to join in the preparations, allowing you more time to bond as you prepare your favorite dishes together.

2. Connect with loved ones from afar.
It’s easy to have face-to-face conversations with family members who don’t live within quick traveling distance. Select the camera option on your cell phone while placing calls (FaceTime on an iPhone, for example). Through your computer, plan a “visit” through Skype. The program can be downloaded on a computer or cell phone free of charge.

3. Write letters.
Although texting, email, and Facebook and other social media can be easy ways to communicate, sending a loved one a letter or small gift through the mail can be a thoughtful way to connect.

4. Volunteer together.
Whether you’re planning to visit veterans at a facility or you’re hosting a fundraiser, be sure to invite family members along to help out. Explain to them the importance of what you’re doing and why it’s important to you.
